About the Troupe

Culture is far more than performance—it is identity, history, and a vital bridge between generations. Based in Entebbe, Uganda, the Adeudeu Cultural Troupe is a community-led collective dedicated to safeguarding and celebrating the nation’s diverse heritage.

The troupe is named after the Adeudeu, a traditional arched bow harp played by the Iteso people of Eastern Uganda, signaling a profound commitment to keeping ancestral rhythms alive. Founded by passionate cultural leader Susan, the troupe grew from a shared vision with Africa Sustainable Journeys (ASJ) to protect local traditions. Guided by these foundational values, it has evolved into a vibrant collective of over 20 dancers, musicians, drummers, singers, and storytellers from diverse backgrounds.

Its members, ranging from master cultural practitioners and parents to students and youth, use their talents not merely to entertain, but to actively protect, celebrate, and pass down the living traditions of Uganda.

Bringing Uganda's Heritage to Life

Uganda is home to more than 60 indigenous communities, each with unique languages, traditions, music, dances, and stories. Adeudeu Cultural Troupe celebrates this remarkable diversity by bringing together vibrant cultural expressions from across the country, allowing visitors to experience not only captivating performances but also the deeper meaning behind them.

Every dance carries a story. Its movements, rhythms, costumes, and songs reflect the history, values, celebrations, and lived experiences of the communities they represent, transforming every performance into a journey through Uganda’s living heritage.

Our diverse repertoire includes:

  • Bakisimba, Nankasa & Muwogola – Traditional Buganda dances celebrating joy, energetic rhythms, elegance, and the importance of community togetherness.
  • Runyege-Ntogoro & Ekizino – Rhythms from Western Uganda representing courtship, community gatherings, strength, and unity.
  • Larakaraka – A vibrant Acholi dance from Northern Uganda celebrating relationships, celebration, and enduring cultural values.
  • Traditional Music & Instruments – Authentic sounds created by drums, the Adeudeu harp, Adungu, Endongo, Endingidi, and other indigenous instruments that connect audiences directly to Uganda’s cultural roots.

Traditional songs performed by the troupe tell stories of community life, respect for elders, love, harvest celebrations, welcoming visitors, and historical memories that have been passed from one generation to another.

Meet Our Founder, Susan Nassuna

Susan is a passionate cultural leader whose love for traditional performing arts began in childhood and has remained at the heart of her life’s work. From an early age, she developed a deep appreciation for traditional dance, music, and cultural education. During her school years, she shared this passion by teaching fellow students about cultural traditions, helping them learn, appreciate, and celebrate Uganda’s rich heritage.

After completing her studies, Susan transformed that lifelong passion into reality by founding Adeudeu Cultural Troupe—a platform dedicated to preserving, practicing, and sharing Uganda’s cultural expressions with the world.

Through her leadership, the troupe has brought together dancers, musicians, drummers, singers, and storytellers who share a common vision of preserving traditional knowledge while inspiring younger generations to embrace their cultural identity. For Susan, cultural performance is far more than entertainment; it is a powerful way to educate, strengthen communities, support local practitioners, and ensure Uganda’s traditions continue to thrive.

“Culture is our identity. Every dance, every drumbeat, and every story carries the wisdom of those who came before us. By sharing these traditions today, we ensure they continue to inspire generations to come.”— Susan

Empowering the Next Generation

Preserving culture requires more than performance—it requires passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

Adeudeu Cultural Troupe actively mentors young performers by teaching traditional dances, music, drumming, storytelling, and the cultural significance behind every expression. Beyond the stage, the troupe has become a place of learning and cultural exchange where experienced performers guide younger members, ensuring traditional knowledge continues to grow with each generation.

Many of the troupe’s young members are students who balance their education with cultural participation. Through this journey, they develop confidence, discipline, creativity, leadership, and a deeper appreciation for their heritage.

Behind every performance are real people with families, responsibilities, and dreams. Many members are parents and community members who use performance opportunities to support household needs, fund education, and continue practicing the traditions they are passionate about. The troupe creates more than performances—it creates opportunity, belonging, and pride.

Our Partnership with Africa Sustainable Journeys

Africa Sustainable Journeys (ASJ) proudly partners with Adeudeu Cultural Troupe through a shared commitment to protecting, promoting, and celebrating Uganda’s living cultural heritage.

Behind every performance are dedicated cultural practitioners who invest their time, knowledge, and passion in preserving traditions that might otherwise be lost. Through this partnership, ASJ connects travellers, schools, organizations, and tourism partners with authentic cultural experiences that create meaningful opportunities for these practitioners while strengthening the preservation of Uganda’s cultural identity.

Together, ASJ and Adeudeu Cultural Troupe believe that culture should not only be admired—it should be experienced, valued, supported, and protected for generations to come.
