At ASJ, conservation is more than a mission, it’s a movement that guides every aspect of what we do. From protecting gorillas in ancient forests to supporting the communities that share their habitats, we use tourism as a force for ecological restoration, environmental education, and empowering locals to safeguard wildlife and ecosystems.
Protecting Nature, As One
Uganda Schools Tree Planting Campaign
This rainy season, we’re inviting you to plant hope with us. Together with Platform for the Needy (PLANE) and FORT TV, we’re nurturing the next generation of climate champions through our Greening Uganda Schools Campaign. By 2030, our dream is to see 1 million trees thriving in schoolyards across Uganda, living classrooms where children learn to care for the earth.
From September to October 2025, we’re planting 20,000 indigenous and fruit trees in 40 schools across Fort Portal, Kabarole, and Bunyangabu. Already, 6,000 trees are growing strong, and with your support, we can do so much more.
Your gift, whether small or large, directly provides seedlings, transport, and the hands that put each tree in the ground. Most of all, it gives children the chance to grow up as guardians of our shared planet. Join us in planting hope for future generation.
Why Environmental Education is the True Conservation Tool
While donations and policies play their part, we believe that the most powerful conservation tool is education. A child who understands the value of biodiversity is less likely to harm it. A family who sees the forest as a partner in survival will fight to protect it.
Across our programs, conservation literacy is at the core, and we tailor our content to be locally relevant, engaging, and empowering.
Giving Back More Than We Take
We proudly commit:
- A portion of every trip proceeds supports local conservation efforts in our local areas.
- Contribution to global climate action through certified carbon offsetting with Sustainable Travel International (STI).
- Annual support for environmental and community sustainability programs
By investing in grassroots and international initiatives, we protect and restore endangered ecosystems while inspiring communities to become frontline stewards of the lands they’ve called home for generations.

Building a Greener Future
Conservation begins with understanding and flourishes through connection. At ASJ, we don’t just fund conservation, we live it, teach it, and share it. Every tree we plant, every child we educate, and every traveler, partner, and community member we engage strengthens the long-term resilience of East Africa’s wildlife and habitats.
Our conservation approach includes:
- Organizing seasonal tree planting campaigns with communities, local schools, partners, and volunteers.
- Incorporating conservation activities into our journeys,
Hosting awareness days and environmental clean-up events in our villages and towns. - Visiting communities and schools to deliver environmental education sessions.
- Sharing conservation knowledge with guests during their trips.
These activities foster pride, ownership, and lasting commitment among communities to protecting wildlife and restoring ecosystems, while giving travelers a meaningful role in supporting conservation efforts.

Bwindi Forest, Uganda: From Displacement to Environmental Stewardship
For the Batwa Indigenous people, Bwindi Forest has long been home, healer, and heritage. After their displacement in 1991, many Batwa lost access to this sacred ecosystem—and with it, much of the traditional knowledge that had sustained the forest for generations.
ASJ supports the Batwa in reconnecting with their ecological heritage through initiatives that celebrate culture, raise environmental awareness, and foster positive engagement with conservation.
Our Work in Bwindi Includes:
-
Cultural awareness sessions: Working with some Batwa elders to share their traditions that highlight the forest’s importance and their role in protecting the forest.
-
Carrying out environmental education for Batwa youth: blending elders’ traditional knowledge with practical lessons on forest conservation, sustainable use of resources, and living in harmony with Bwindi Forest.
-
Youth programs: Supporting opportunities for Batwa elders to mentor children and youth on traditional knowledge, forest plants, and wildlife.
-
Guest participation experiences: Offering travelers meaningful ways to engage with Batwa communities, learn about their traditions, and appreciate the forest’s ecological value.
Through these efforts, ASJ helps revive Indigenous knowledge, strengthen cultural identity, and support the Batwa in reconnecting with and protecting their forest environment, all within the scope of responsible tourism.

How You Can Help Protect The Wild
You don’t have to walk the forest paths with us to be part of this mission.
- Travel with Purpose: Every journey you book with us supports environmental action.
- Sponsor a Forest Education Event: Fund or organize a workshop, awareness day, conservation camp, or tree planting activity
- Partner with Us: NGOs, academic institutions, changemakers, families, individuals, and conservation groups are welcome to co-create impact
- Volunteer Your Skills: From eco-education to campaign design, your knowledge can inspire
When conservation is led by the people who live closest to the wild, it becomes not just possible, but unstoppable!

Our Global Responsibility: Carbon Offsetting
While we invest heavily in local restoration, we also recognize that international travel has a global footprint. That’s why every ASJ trip is climate-conscious from start to finish.
Through our collaboration with Sustainable Travel International, we calculate the emissions generated from each guest’s journey — including flights, transfers, accommodations, and activities — and offset 100% of that carbon through verified global projects.
How much is Your Carbon Footprint?
Are you kind enough to tell us how much your journey costs in terms of Carbon footprint?
