Most travelers require a visa. We recommend applying online for an e-visa in advance. Those visiting Uganda and Rwanda apply for East African Visa.

Primate Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that bring you up close with Africa’s most remarkable primates in their natural habitats. Uganda and Rwanda offer some of the world’s best opportunities for this adventure, with strict conservation measures in place to protect both the primates and their environment.

In Uganda, gorilla trekking is offered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, while chimpanzee trekking is popular in Kibale Forest and Budongo Forest. In Rwanda, gorilla trekking is found only in Volcanoes National Park, and chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest.

Yes, permits are required and must be booked in advance. Currently, gorilla trekking permits cost $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda per person. Chimpanzee trekking permits cost $250 in Uganda (Kibale) and around $90 in Rwanda (Nyungwe). These fees support conservation and local communities.

Yes. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while for chimpanzee trekking it is 12 years. This ensures both visitor safety and minimal disturbance to the primates.

Trekking can last between 2 to 6 hours, often across uneven, forested terrain. A moderate level of fitness is required. Essentials include sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing, rain gear, insect repellent, gloves, and a small backpack. We provide a full packing guide once your trip is confirmed.
