About the Troupe

Based in Entebbe, Uganda, Adeudeu Cultural Troupe is a community-led collective dedicated to preserving, celebrating and sharing Uganda’s diverse cultural heritage through authentic music, dance and storytelling. Bringing together more than twenty dancers, drummers, singers, musicians and storytellers, the troupe represents a shared commitment to ensuring Uganda’s living traditions continue to inspire future generations.

The troupe takes its name from the Adeudeu, a traditional arched bow harp of the Iteso people of Eastern Uganda, symbolising the enduring connection between music, storytelling and cultural identity.

Founded by cultural leader Susan Nassuna, Adeudeu Cultural Troupe was born from her lifelong passion for Uganda’s traditional performing arts and her unwavering belief that culture should be lived, celebrated and passed from one generation to the next. Her vision was to create a platform where talented cultural practitioners could preserve their heritage, share authentic traditions with visitors and inspire younger generations to embrace their cultural identity.

As Susan’s vision began to take shape, Africa Sustainable Journeys (ASJ) became a collaborative partner, helping transform that vision into a sustainable cultural tourism initiative. While Susan continues to provide the cultural leadership and direction of the troupe, ASJ contributes its expertise in responsible tourism, experience development, storytelling and market access, ensuring every cultural experience creates meaningful value for both visitors and the community. Together, the partnership has strengthened the troupe’s ability to preserve Uganda’s living heritage while creating dignified opportunities for the performers who keep these traditions alive.

Today, Adeudeu Cultural Troupe is far more than a performing group. Bakisimba, Nankasa & Muwogola – The Spirit of Buganda

These iconic dances from the Buganda Kingdom are among Uganda’s most recognised cultural traditions. Characterised by graceful movements, vibrant rhythms and energetic drumming, they celebrate joy, unity, respect and community togetherness. Traditionally performed during royal ceremonies, celebrations and important social gatherings, they remain an enduring symbol of Buganda’s cultural identity.

Runyege-Ntogoro & Ekizino – Traditions of Western Uganda

Originating from the kingdoms and communities of Western Uganda, these energetic dances celebrate friendship, courtship, courage and community life. Their lively footwork and coordinated movements demonstrate the strength of social bonds while reflecting the customs and values that have shaped generations.

Larakaraka – Northern Uganda’s Celebration of Community

Larakaraka is one of the most celebrated traditional dances of the Acholi people. Performed during social gatherings and celebrations, it represents friendship, courtship and community harmony. Through powerful rhythms, expressive movement and traditional songs, the dance reflects the resilience and cultural pride of Northern Uganda.

During her school years, Susan became known for encouraging fellow students to participate in cultural activities, helping young people appreciate traditions that were gradually receiving less attention. She understood that preserving culture begins with inspiring others to value it.

This lifelong passion eventually led her to establish Adeudeu Cultural Troupe.

Her vision was not simply to create another performing group, but to build a community where experienced cultural practitioners could share their knowledge, where young people could learn directly from skilled performers, and where traditional arts could create meaningful opportunities for those who dedicate themselves to preserving them.

Today, under Susan’s leadership, the troupe has grown into a diverse collective of dancers, musicians, drummers, singers and storytellers who represent different regions and cultures across Uganda. Together they continue to celebrate the country’s extraordinary heritage while demonstrating that traditional performing arts remain relevant in today’s world.
