Meet your guide and begin your journey by shared public taxi, travelling alongside local residents as you pass through Kampala and neighbouring towns. Along the way, observe the bustle of daily life, roadside markets, small businesses, and the changing landscapes as the urban areas gradually give way to the countryside. Upon reaching Mukono District, transfer to a motorcycle taxi (boda boda) for the final ride to the village, following local roads through farms and rural communities before arriving to meet your hosts.
9:30 am – Traditional Welcome Cultural Performance
Arrive to the vibrant beats of Kiganda dances, Bakisimba and Nankasa. The colorful costumes, rhythmic drumming, and infectious energy create a joyful welcome. After introductions, your hosts will share the program for the day and make you feel at home.
10:00 am – Guided Farm Walk and Plant Stories
Join local farmers on a guided walk through their gardens. Discover how staples like matooke (bananas), coffee, beans, and medicinal herbs are grown and used. Each plant carries its own story, whether spiritual, medicinal, or culinary. Touch the soil, breathe in the fresh garden scents, and experience farming methods passed down for generations.
11:00 am – Journey to the Well
Walk with women and children to a communal well about 300 meters away. Along the way, hear stories and songs that reveal the social bonds created during this daily routine of fetching water.
11:20 am – Indigenous Fruit Tasting
Relax under the shade of trees and enjoy a colorful platter of freshly harvested fruits including sweet bananas, juicy pineapples, sugarcane, guavas, and papayas. Your hosts will share the cultural significance of these fruits in rituals, festivals, and daily meals.
11:40 am – Hands-on Traditions: Cooking with the Community
Step into the open-air kitchen and join your hosts in preparing traditional Ugandan dishes. Learn to peel matooke, wrap luwombo in banana leaves, and cook cassava, potatoes, and local stews and relishes using authentic methods. This hands-on experience is a chance to cook, laugh, and share stories alongside your hosts, truly connecting with village life.
1:30 pm – Traditional Ugandan Lunch
Gather around for a hearty communal lunch. Savor luwombo, whether chicken, beef, or groundnut stew, steamed in banana leaves and served with matooke, sweet potatoes, beans, and leafy greens. The flavors, combined with the warm hospitality, make this meal unforgettable.
After lunch, settle in shaded gardens for cultural teachings led by Kojjas and Sengas (traditional uncles and aunts). They’ll share age-old wisdom on relationships, family, and community life.
Next, dive into interactive activities:
- Banana Juice & Local Brew Making – Learn how ripe bananas are peeled, pressed, and naturally fermented to make two village favorites. Taste the sweet, refreshing banana juice and try the mildly alcoholic local brew, drinks often shared during gatherings and celebrations.
- Crafts – Join women in weaving colorful baskets and mats, using techniques passed down through generations. You may also observe the ancient art of bark cloth making, where tree bark is softened and beaten into a fabric once reserved for royalty.
- Games & Play – Spend time with children and youth enjoying football, rope skipping, and board games like ludo and chess. The laughter, energy, and playful spirit create instant connections and give you a true feel of community life.
4:30 pm – Tree Planting and Conservation Practice
Conclude the day with a meaningful conservation activity. Plant a tree as a symbol of your bond with the community and as a contribution to restoring the environment. This simple act ensures that your visit leaves behind a living legacy for both people and nature.
5:00 pm – Farewell and Departure
Say heartfelt goodbyes to your new friends before driving back to Kampala or Entebbe. You will leave not only with memories but also with the warmth, flavors, and inspiring stories of Uganda’s countryside.
